Jaffa, the Orange’s Clockwork is a political essay excavating the entwined visual and political history of that famous citrus fruit originating in Palestine and known worldwide as the 'Jaffa Orange'.
The close reading of the “Jaffa” brand’s representation is a way to reveal the untold story of what was once a commune industry and symbol to Arabs and Jews in Palestine.

Actually, while the Jaffa orange has been translated into a symbol of the Zionist enterprise and the state of Israel, for Palestinians it represents a powerful symbol of the loss and destruction of their homeland.
Based on photographic and cinematographic documents, some going back as far as to the 19th century, Eyal Sivan’s film shows the orange groves at a time when Arab Jaffa was one of Palestine’s most populated and thriving cities. By exploring the visual representation and history of the brand, the film reflects on western fantasies related to the ‘Orient’, the ‘Holy Land’ and the State of Israel.  Visually captivating and politically bold, Sivan’s latest weaves a rich tapestry of stunning archival material and striking interviews, ultimately asking what the Jaffa’s past might tell us about the future in Palestine/Israel. As indeed, Eyal Sivan provides the backdrop of the underlying visual conflicts in Israel-Palestine, and foregrounds the project of a joint historical narrative.
