Honorable Mention - The Wolgin Award, Jerusalem Film Festival 2006
A cinematic diary that documents change over time, exposing the process of life and death, demolition and building, all the while my neighborhood is undergoing metamorphosis.
A window overlooks a courtyard. Inside the window is the sister; down in the courtyard, the brother. Each of them has his own family; together they make a bigger family. The story begins with the sudden death of Udi, the brother. From her studio window on the second floor, his sister Anat looks down onto the courtyard; she sees the garden and studio that Udi created there, he was a potter and sculptor. Anat clings to the window and looks down at the courtyard, watching life continue without him: watching at his family, seeing visiting friends. Outside the courtyard the historic Shlush Bridge, under which Ottoman trains passed; the daily guided tours that reconstruct the glorious past of the first Jewish neighborhood outside the walls of the City of Jaffa, the giant skyscraper that is being constructed, overshadowing the neighborhood. Eventually the courtyard is sold to a contractor and is condemned to be destroyed. She continues to film the destruction and the reconstruction, stage after stage, until the landscape is entirely blocked from view.
Note of intention
I was standing behind my window looking out onto a familiar place and landscape that being destroyed and reconstruct, trying to hold what is no longer exist, to portray the void after the loss of my brother. It is a cinematic diary that documents change over time, exposing the process of life and death, demolition and building, all the while my neighborhood is undergoing metamorphosis. Ultimately, it is only memory that ruins and builds, deceiving and changing the drama of disappearance, according to the narratives we invent.
